New Regulations Provide for Streamlined Insurance Appeal Process

by Rebecca Farley on August 2, 2010

The Obama Administration in July released interim final regulations under the Affordable Care Act providing for a streamlined process by which individuals can appeal insurance company decisions about their coverage. The regulations simplify existing claims appeal processes and ensure that appeals for all plan types can be brought before an external review board. The regulations take effect on Sept. 23, 2010, but in states where there is already an external review board, they will go into effect in July 2011.
The Department of Health and Human Services has issued a fact sheet on the new regulations.
