Flat Stephen anxiously awaits with Mary Blake, Public Health Advisor with the Federal Center for Mental Health Services, (CMHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to deliver her keynote address at On Our Own of Mayland, Inc.’s 30th Annual Conference at Rocky Gap, Maryland. Her faithful psychiatric service dog, Ollie is making his debut on the speaker circuit.

Flat Stephen enjoyed his Sunday afternoon of sailing with Skipper Cheryl Sharp on the sea. He was almost blown away by 20 knot winds, but he is an experienced sailor and held his course. He took a few notes so Spirit of Juno can take a first over Tucana in the next Charleston Bermuda Race. In the meantime, he is hoping that his vocal support for the National Council’s efforts on Hill Day will help us win a first in policy and advocacy.

Looks like the National Council’s singing staff might have some competition! The Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority in Auburn Hills, MI sent us this video of Malkia Newmann serenading Flat Stephen. To Malkia and OCCMHA, we say: Bravo! To the rest of the world, we say: bring on the Flat Stephen music videos!
Flat Stephen also went to work studying OCCMHA’s mission statement. Hopefully they don’t quiz him on it later!

The pictures are arriving from Flat Stephen’s Memorial Day Weekend adventures! Dr. David Ballard of the American Psychological Association writes, “Flat Stephen had a busy holiday weekend — when he wasn’t thinking about how to improve access to quality mental health services or expressing his outrage about the proposed elimination of Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the DSM-5, he spent some time hanging out at the pool, tossing burgers on the grill, and acting out scenes from his favorite movies.”
Flat Stephen was looking so hot in his patriotic speedo, even a dip in the pool couldn’t cool him down!

Next, Flat Stephen zipped over to the Lone Star State. Bob Brown invited him to be the guest of honor at the 27th Annual Conference of the Texas Council of Community Centers, where a key speaker will be the National Council’s own Linda Rosenberg.

While visiting the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona in Tucson, Flat Stephen learned that he can’t be used as currency. It’s OK, Flat Stephen – we know your worth! While he was at CPSA, Flat Stephen also got a lesson about the birds and the bees, when he learned how to reproduce… himself.
After all the cultural training he got during his visit to CPSA, Flat Stephen now hangs out with a more diverse crowd!
Before he left CPSA, Flat Stephen got an awesome new t-shirt that he picked out while doing some shopping at CODAC Closet in Arizona. Good choice, Flat Stephen – definitely brings out your eyes!

He was amazed at the electronic health records system used at Raphael, but he only got to peruse it after signing the confidentiality paperwork! Always health-conscious, Flat Stephen also got a quick dental exam while testing out the dental clinic with Brenda Hill, Raphael Health Center Dental Assistant.

Flat Stephen started his journey around the country in the National Council’s offices, where he visited our staff.
At Lauren Padgett’s desk, he met Pepper the Cat.
Next, he visited Shellee Chen’s office, where he cracked penguin jokes.
At Mohini Venkatesh’s desk, he lobbied for DC voting rights and against pork barrel spending.
Flat Stephen inspired Danny Linden, Laira Kolkin, Becca Farley, and Kirsten Reed to feel patriotic.
Flat Stephen even got to meet Sarah Palin!
Nina Marshall explained to Stephen how hot the weather is at Hill Day.
When he visited Ali Siemianowski, he helped assemble data for the Member Engagement survey.
