AZ: State Restores Funding for Medicaid, Reauthorizes CHIP

by Rebecca Farley on July 27, 2010

On May 6, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law legislation restoring funds that had been cut from the state’s Medicaid program. The new law also reauthorizes and finances Arizona’s CHIP program, which had been eliminated in the state’s budget. The cuts, which would have left 47,000 low-income children and 310,000 childless adults without health coverage, were intended to save money. However, the passage of federal healthcare reform requires that states maintain current levels of Medicaid and CHIP eligibility in order to receive future federal health aid.
